You can install them without a tune. For maximum performance a tune with your supporting mods is the way to go. If your an automatic car a tune is a killer bang for the buck mod. It speeds the lazy stock shift points up. Probably should have posted this in the S197 section or the pipes boost and juice section.

Off road x-pipe? If so you'll need a tune to turn off the rear o2's and COT.
Regardless you'll probably still need a tune for the o2 transport delay although with the Kooks it's not as bad since they're not really a longtube but rather a mid length.

Regardless of whether you NEED a tune or not. You should get a tune. You won't see hardly any performance benefits without the tune so there would be no point to upgrade without it.

On my 2011 5.0, I had an offroad x-pipe on the stock headers. I just upgraded to full length headers with an ORX. The difference in airflow/backpressure was enough to change the idle, and I've had to tweak the tune to make the car idle properly.

No need to flip flop between answers, just straight up, get a tune if you want your car to run right with the parts you've purchased. It's a lot safer if the car is tuned to work with the mods you've installed rather than run them without the tune .
