my car stays right around 190 driving through normal traffic..maybe reaching 200-205 if i'm at a redlight for a while. sitting in traffic not moving at all or very few feet per minute..the temp just slowly climbs up to 220+ where she'll start to run bad and want to stall (happened once..kept stalling) the only other time i've had to sit in a traffic jam i sat for about 10 minutes and it crept up to 220 where i decided to pull off and go the other way to avoid stalling (bad place to stall..)

but my question is, what causes my cooling system to run well moving then overheat sitting still?
is my fan too weak to pull air when sitting? 5 blade mechanical with shroud. i think i have a 185 or 190 tstat that was replaced not too long ago..the bottom radiator hose doesn't collapse, but does have a real small leak. any ideas?? 3 row radiator..looks clean

My car gets pretty hot while sitting in traffic, the best reason I know for it being hotter is there is less air moving accross the radiator, because the minute I start moving for over 10 seconds, the temp drops a bit.

I would like some advice on this problem as well though if anyone has it, mine isn't so bad that it will stall but I want it controlled more. I had to rebuild the engine when I got it because a head was cracked from overheating, don't want that happening again!

Electric fan? Clutch fan? What are some cheap ways to control it

+1 when i start moving it drops back to normal after 30 seconds or so

You either have the fan placed wrong in the shroud, or need a better fan. I run a Flex-a-lite with a shroud and no issues sitting in traffic. If it cools fine while cruising then the radiator is working, but sitting you have to rely entirely on the fan.

tomorrow i'll look and find the name of the fan (if i can..i think i remember seeing it) but it seems like a good fan..

could the little leak i have in my bottom hose be affecting anything? or like you said, the radiator doesn't matter while i'm stopped so it wouldn't matter?



there's a picture i have of it ^^...i think it's a 6 blade lol i was wrong about it being a 5

It's airflow related, and at low/idle speed that comes from the fan/shroud

Classics are notorious for running hot. It's just common.

That's a 10,000rpm Flex-A-Lite from the looks, same one I have. But it seems that the shroud opening might be too wide and the fan doesn't sit deep enough in it. About half the fan should be int he shroud and half out, and it should fill up most of the shroud.
