This might sound stupid, but my mustang sat for about a month in a bodyshop as it was being repaired. Now, i got it back, and when i start the car, or rev the engine up to about 3000rpm in neutral or with the clutch in, a loud screech is heard. Is this just because the belt wasn't used for too long, or does it need replacement or tightening?

 

Get under the hood and grab the throttle linkage and rev the motor. You'll know if it's the belt. If this isn't it, I would suspect the throw-out bearing. When a car sits that long, no lube is being thrown around on parts that require grease or pretty constant motion. It is much better to drive the p*&s out of them than let them sit. Hope that helps.

 

Where's the throw out bearing? I tried grabbing the throttle linkage etc, but that didn't do anything to the belt...so, you might be right with the bearing.

 

O.K. Put the car in gear and start letting out the clutch slowly, without giving it the gas. If you don't heal the squeal, try giving some gas next. The throw out bearing is on the tranny shaft and is what engages the clutch when you push it in. They go bad and start to sqeal. I don't know how they make them now, but some used to have a grease fitting. The bearing is on a fork with the end of the fork coming out of the bell housing.

 

When you hear the squeak, press the clutch in. If the noise goes away its the throwout bearing.

Yeah, the noise went away when i engaged the clutch. so i guess it must be the bearing. Are those expensive? easy to install?

 

If you have jack stands and a floor jack, because you have to pull the tranny. If you don't have detailed instructions sunnyjim, don't attempt it yourself. Find a friend who knows this stuff, or have a shop do it. You're going to need to inspect the clutch and flywheel while you have it apart, so it's a good idea to have someone handy who knows what to look for.

 

Easy fix. Change the whole clutch anyway. I dont care if theres 20 miles on it.
