I got an 01 Cobra, 4.6 DOHC, not supercharged. It has a lower end rod knock. It still runs but sounds really bad cuz of the loud knock. I just got it towed into JBA Performance shop in San Diego. They said I prolly won't need to rebuilt it since it still starts but they quoted for $6500 for a rebuild. I cannot afford that.

What can I expect as far as repairing a lower end rod knock? They said probably the bearings or some other internal needs to replaced and other stuff. What sort of price can I expect roughly so I don't get ripped off...

Well if it is a rod knock, and it just occured, you could drop the k-member, drop the pan, drop the crank, get it polished, and install new crank/rod bearings and keep on trucking. If you can do the labor, you'll save TONS of cash..

500 to pull motor, 500 to reinstall. You will also need to figure on buying new fluids, gaskets, bearings, and rings if it has to come apart. There will be an assembly cost as well.

If one of the cylinder walls is scored you may need to bore it and purchase new pistons and have machine work done as well. At this point it would be dumb not to throw new rods in as well.

6500 is pretty pricey for a standard rebuild. They are probably quoting you high end rods, pistons, crank, and a valve job on the heads as well.

Or you could just buy a new one from Ford like I did

to whitefox: did you pay $4000 installed? And how much, roughly not to do a complete rebuild cause it still runs and only has 83k miles on it, but just to go down in to fix the rod knock? Basically go down and most likely do some machine work and replace rods or bearings....He quoted for a complete rebuild $6500. But he said that was only if the engine didn't start. I tried starting it and it starts up and runs, but just has that knock. So then he said to tow it in so he can hear it and most likely it would be cheaper...

It would be cheaper to pull the motor yourself, and then give it to your machine shop to have the bottom end torn down, crank checked/polished/cut...(whatever they have to do) install the correct bearings, re-ring and hone, and put it all back together. But that is a time extensive repair. I paid 3916$ for a 96-98 4V Cobra engine (stock replacement in my car) All I had to do was pull my motor out, and install the new one in and swap the intake/exhaust manifolds.

Going rate around here is 1200 for the labor + parts and machine work.
