Automatic Choke Operation

Automatic Choke Operation
I just want to make sure I understand how this feature works. All my vehicles have been newer and fuel injected so I am still learning about the old vehicles.
The vehicle is a 1966 Mustang with a 200ci.
From I understand, the choke will be activated until the exhaust manifold gets hot and then the choke tube that goes from the exhaust manifold to the carb will send hot air to the choke which will deactivate it.
Is this correct?
Now, the tube that goes from the exhaust manifold to the carb was rusted in half so the tube was not going to the exhaust manifold.
When I posted my thread about my spark plugs and the condition of my motor a few of the replies mentioned that it might be running on the rich side.
Is it possible that the choke was always on and this was causing my motor to run rich?
Again just trying to understand this system, I will definitely replace the tube when I reassemble.
Thanks Again
