I had the same problem a few years ago. The situation you described was mine, almost exactly. I took it to the stealership and they had it for a week (not sure if there was a tsb for it yet) and all is good now. I would say that just because they (Ford) know the problem exists doesn't mean that they fixed it. If I remember correctly, there is a rubber boot covering the cable and it was split open. I would check that first...def. do not drive until you git it figured out though. Good luck
