There may be more, but that doesn't mean there's a problem finding parts for diesels. Like I said, do some research, look up some prices. There's not that much difference. Of course there's "diesel ricers". There's people on both extremes no matter what you're talking about.

What I was trying to argue is that it's more efficient to mod a petrol engine to get the same or better power. Why mod a diesel when you can mod a petrol to get better results?

The engines themselves are not. Like I said, in the US almost all diesels are found in trucks though. Of course it's easier to make a car faster than a truck, regardless of how you power it.

If they were cleaner, Toyota would drop them inside the Prius and get 100 MPG out them instead of the 60 from petrol engines.

It's more complicated than that. Look at all the diesel cars sold in Europe. Look at all the laws that keep them out of the US. The big 3 sell great cars.... in foreign markets.
Then you have to consider how the US market would accept them. Many people still have bad opinions of diesel. How long would it take for people to start accepting them?
Oh, and like I already said. Diesels ARE cleaner than comparable gas vehicles. They do put out more pollutants per gallon, but do to their higher energy per gallon, they put out less per mile.
