Were you on a hill? The pawl used in the park position could have gotten hung up, particularly if you did not apply the parking brake before moving the gearshift lever to the park position.
Do all your brake lights work? I think there is a sensing circuit to detect current draw when you step on the brake pedal. If the current is not detected, then the car may think you are not stepping on the brake pedal.
Have a screwdriver handy in case you have to remove the little plastic cover next to the gearshift lever in order to access the brake-shift interlock. I also think it would be better to use a screwdriver to push down to release the brake-shift interlock rather than using your car key, even though the owner's guide says to use your key.

Marty, if you didn't have bad luck you wouldn't have any kind of luck at all. Check to see if fuses 39, 59, and 68 in the fuse box under the hood are okay. My recommendation is to replace the fuses one at a time if you have spare fuses. Sometimes a fuse can look okay, but the internal wire may be damaged.

I don't know if this is the issue but I owned a 98 Mustang years ago and when it would get very cold outside it would do the exact same thing. I think it had to do with something freezing because it never did it unless it was very cold. I would have to mess with the shifter for minutes before getting it to move in gear. It used to drive me nuts but I never did fix the problem as I sold the car shortly after and purchased my first GT.

I have a 2008 Manual v6 Mustang. I started having issues with it not going into 1st gear or Reverse (without horrible grinding) unless I put it into a middle gear first. I researched the issue last night. Since 1st and Reverse do not have synchronisers I reasoned that would make them more sensitive to general transmission problems. There was an odor coming from the tranny and I figured that the new clutch was going out after only 2 years (even though I drive like an old man).
I tried the cheap fix first and it worked. I had the transmission flushed and filled at a quick lube and the old fluid was black. After I worked with the tranny a little but through all of the gears (20 minutes of city driving) the problem seems to have gone away.
85$ fix instead of pilot bearing, or new clutch. I was 10K mi from needing the fluid changed per the manual, but things happen.
Hope this helps someone.
