You'd come out about the same if you got a local shop to actually do the build if you buy all the pieces from SSM, but I'd rather let Tom slap it all together, since he knows those things inside and out.

I'd recommend upgrading to an 01+ block as well. If you can swing the cash, get that race prepped crank option too!!!!

He doesn't need a "race prepped crank" look at _J_'s car...

Well the option didn't exist when his was built. I'm considering it, but not sure yet. I've been looking at some windage tray options, which he offers, that will pretty much eliminate the need for the "race prep". I'm gonna just buy the 4.3 rotating assembly and get the "balancing" option. That should do fine with my setup

There are still more things you can upgrade, metal supercoupe lifter guides, compcams hydraulic high rpm lifters(part # 851-16), Comp titanium retainers, you could even switch to 8mm valves, but the gains are not worth the effort or cost(from what I read, I read a lot lol).
As for the price v/s ordering a shortblock you can use me as an example, It has cost me $3060 for my shortblock, and that's with a 02 block.

Sure it did, with the money _J_ has spent on his car anything was an option for him pretty much. He could have found a shop to micropolish/shot peened/cryo treated and whatever else he wanted

I'm really hoping to see someone consistently get above 700hp. I only want 550hp out of mine, for now.

700 wow, I didn't know the 4.2's were capable of that, although I guess with enough money you can do whatever you want.
