Now that I have my mustang the first thing Im looking towards is duel exhaust.
Since im in Cali and have strict emissions I know I cant do longtubes. and Im trying to stay low cost as I am a High school student. I was thinking about just buying 2 thrush mufflers and asking for the shop to custom fab everything up for true duel. Does this sound right? anyone know about how much it should all cost? should I go with a different muffler? i just know thrush is a flowmaster clone and i dont wanta shell out dough for flows.

Pypes and other companies make a H-pipe that welds in place of the Y-section and allows you to use GT/Cobra mufflers and flow tubes.
You can also buy a 94/95 GT/Cobra stock catted midpipe and have the shop modify the flanges to fit your headers and you will be able to use GT/Cobra mufflers and flow tubes.
I suggest keeping it in stock configuration and DO NOT allow the muffler shop to do whatever the hell they want. Most places will chop up the exhaust and make their own hangers and mangle it so that you can not change parts on your own without modification.
Get the Pypes kit or have a stock GT/Cobra midpipe modified.
I did this with a 94/95 GT/Cobra midpipe and because those were T5 transmission the trans mounts were perfect, I am not sure about 96-04 because they use a T45 and TR3650 trans mount for the midpipe.
if you dont mind can i get a link of the H pipe i cant seem to find it. unless its the O/R one which i cant get

my car passed MA emissions and i believe we have the same standards as you. i baugh a O/R H pipe (they dont make a catted one for LT) and had two dynomax high flows welded in, and a 2.5" cat back with force pro series mufflers (flowcrapper knock offs). I pointed at some little plaque/plate down by the collector and told them its CARB (cali air regutariy board). car passed the sniff test, now granted i baught new header gaskets, new o2s, and MILS (you will prob need or it will set the CEL off) i paid just over a grand for.
o look for a set of 94-98 stock manifolds, a catted H pipe (i liked my MAC) and a 2.5" dual cat back with the force mufflers, or you could just find a GT cat back and have a shop weld them up for you

Why not do this? I know its for 99 up but you can do the same thing with your 97? This way you can get duals and a good sound from your V6. Also alot of the GT guys that have upgraded their exhaust would probably just give it to you or sell it for cheap. I saw this link in another thread.
I had the exhaust shop chop my y and make duals back to fit a GT exhaust, than I had flowmaster 44's welded in.
Now that I have LT's I will need to figure out something else, But I'm planning on putting the LT's on, towing the car to the exhaust shop, and having them make a short X to mate the LT's to the GT pipes.
is there really much of a difference between the pypes system and true duels beside the couple of hp? im learning towards the pypes because i can do it my self and it comes with all i need. and i dont have to go through the hassle of a shop. im just looking for the sound and the duel exhaust look. not much of anything else
