i had a 93 thunderbird with a 3.8 and it would turn 6500.id just keep it at 5500 if it was me.ive also blow up 3 of them.they dont like high rpms for a long time.
if your stock you shouldnt be running up past 5300 anyways, the powerband is not up there, stock dynos show the hp drop off at around ~5k so thats when you should shift. but if you really wanna be up that high set the limiter at 6k

yeah good point. what mods would i need to continue making power that high? im looking into 3.73 or 4.10 gears, cai w/handheld tuner. Exhaust headers all the way back. would that be enough. I really want to get a supercharger but im not sure what would fit the v6 and i really dont have the funds at the moment
Porting brought my power band up a little higher than the stock toppout at about 4950rpms.
As for redlines, what you have to worry about are the lifters. I have heard of people having them fail at just 5400rpms and some say they are good for 6400rpms.
I have my rev limiter set to 5200rpms because even though my power band was raised a little, its not raised that much and I wont want to hurt my engine for 3 more peak ponies.
I worked too hard on the damn thing to blow it up trying to match those little honda boys doing 6 - 7 - 8000rpms. There are a couple STOCK honda engines out there that have a redline over 8000rpms. Dont need to even think about going there in my car.
Rpms dont mean crap if you dont have the power there. Say your peak power is at 5500rpms but you are rated for 7500rpm redline, well in those 2000rpms you could possibly drop half of your peak horsepower off.
Horsepower does not stay constant after you hit your peak potential.
