I got the Cobra 9 band and it picls up every little thing. A friend of mine has the older passport (i think) and it has never gone off once. Never yet has it failed me and it was $80. The best thing to do is obviously drive normal and LOOK. 50% of the time there is an undercover or cruiser around you without the radar on. NJ sucks though, the cops have nothing better to do besides harrass you for stupid sh*t.

thats why you have to learn to understand your detector

i have a passport x50 works great. no radar detector made is a real cop detector, they just kinda lend a hand if the gun is on.
if you have a heavy foot it may save you a few citations tho.
i had a few sub $100 cobra before and they broke.

neo8222 - you're absolutely right.. Most detectors you can figure when it is something worth paying attention to but idk.. i used to have them and some traffic signals make them go off and i used to feel like every 2 seconds you have to hit the brake.. and sometimes you think its nothing and then bam you see the cop...

winner99 - I kind of resent that comment.. It's not that we have nothing better to do.. It's our job... There are many different divisions in law enforcement. The 3 that many are familiar with is Patrol, Traffic, and Detective Bureau. Detectives dont usually make MV stops.. Traffic is just MV stops and handling accidents. Patrol's job is to respond to emergency calls aka when you call 911 for something.. Obviously there are not people calling at all times so in between calls if we see a motor vehicle infraction we make the stop and decided if we are going to issue. Now to be honest this topic was in relation to Radar Detectors hence the infraction would be speeding. So please tell me how pulling you over for going over the speed limit is stupid sh!t... I could see if you got pulled over for having a slightly loud muffler, a taillight or headlight out, license plate frame, etc.. Even though those are valid reasons to pull someone over most of us don't bother because as you said it is minor and stupid... Now if you are doing 50 in 25 or running red lights I don't quite see how that is stupid.. Whether you want to face it or not you are putting lives at risk because there is a reason the speed limit was set at what it was. So don't jump to the idea that we have nothing better to do. We get paid to go out there and enforce the law. We understand how things are so we bend the rules and don't follow every little law out there. We let people slide in situations where we don't feel it is warranted to issue a summons. So we give a warning. Most people always feel that we have nothing better to do and that we just drive around writing tickets. Its not until you are sitting there getting assaulted or your girlfriend/wife is walking and a guy try to rape her, or someone is breaking into your house and a cop shows up in time to prevent you from being harmed that we get appreciated. And its the attitude that "oh you guys have nothing better to do then write me this ticket" that is the difference between me giving you the 1 ticket and me sitting there walking around your car finding each and every little infraction and issuing for every thing I find.. So as I stated earlier. If you are polite most cops will give you the break whether its letting you off with a warning or maybe just giving you a ticket with no points or a smaller fee.

Pretty much ALL radar/laser speed guns have an "instant on" feature which renders a detector completely useless. The best thing to do is just not speed.

I love it because I'll be cruising at 2-3mph over the speed limit and I get to enjoy those people that pass me and then slow down and take pictures of the car. It's really fun when everyone on the passenger side of the car almost breaks their neck trying to turn around and look at the car.

here in metro detroit area cops seem to park on an entry ramp to the freeway and gun in front of them, like said above, so its easy to get on the freeway and catch them quick, but i think over here they dont use laser, so im sure a good detector could pick them up anyway
