Question 2003 Mustang - Engine Weight and Winter Driving

Hi,
I'm not yet a Mustang owner, but am considering buying a 2003 V6 convertible. The main problem is that I live in MN, and this would be my year-round car, so I'd have to deal with winter driving. I know I can use snow tires and common sense (slower speeds, adequate distance) in winter, but that you can also add extra weight to the trunk to add to traction.

How much does the engine of a Mustang weigh? If I was able to add enough weight to the trunk (big bags of rock salt mostly, I suppose) to match the engine, would that mostly fix the problem with rear wheel drive in winter?

Are there any other things I can do to make the RWD safer in winter?

i had to run mine in the snow for a winter. i put like 4 50lb bags of corn in my trunk and got new all seasons and it worked decently. it still slides a lot, gotta be really easy on the gas pedal everywhere. and good luck if you get stuck, i almost did, i had to keep it floored to get up a snow covered hill lol.

haha ive had to deal with this for about 3-4 yrs now... lets me just say... it sucks!!! i live in ohio so i do get pretty bad winters, but prolly not as bad as you. all i did was put a ton of salt bags in the trunk ( just chose them cuz i got them cheap ) and went slow... ive been stuck in 4 inches of snow, but same time you can go through 1 foot drifts.. its very weird...

just go slow, take your time, and DO NOT SLAM ON BRAKES!!!!!!! if your really desperate, you can get 2 snow tires for the rears ive seen mustangs do it before, looks goofy, but makes it alot easier i would imagine...

hope this helped.

Give yourself lots of room to stop too, without abs, these cars lock up the fronts pretty easy as I have found out on more than one occasion.

Now that i think about it, even with the crappy emitions laws we have, south cal isnt a bad state to live in. No snow (for the most part), very little rain, lots of sun....

Sand/salt in the trunk, drive slow, dont jack on the brakes, leave alot of space, easy on the gas, two snow tires on the rear or all around (doesnt matter if it looks stupid to me its alot safer).
