Instrument Cluster Question

My tach has an intermittent connection. I bought a used guaranteed cluster and am getting ready to put it in. It looks like I'll have to disconnect the entire old panel in order to harvest and replace the tach. When I do this, will the tach have some kind of symbol indicating it's been removed and reinstalled like the way older cars do?

The needle appears to be very firmly attached to the tach. Is there a special tool or technique to ensure I don't break anything while removing it to get it out of the new cluster?

I believe there is a special tool to get the tack needle off. I know they come off because you have to take it off to put a white backround on it....as for your first question I really dont think your going to have any indication that you replaced it with a new one....

Hope your not doing this to try to get a lower odometer reading on your car.

If you are you need to go to the DMV or license bureau and make sure they have the new miles listed on your title.

Remember, even places like Wal-Mark track the miles for service records, its a crime to alter the mileage of a vehicle and not notify the license bureau even if you are going with more miles than the car had.

I'm an amature replacing a BROKEN tach and looking for advice so I don't screw it up. I don't appreciate your rude implication.

I wasnt being rude, I was being informative but I sure as hell will be now!

I dont care if you appreciate it or not, assholes like you sell a million mile car to someone that doesnt know any better because you changed the cluster and kept it out of service stations or the dealership and change clusters when getting it smogged or inspected.

Why would you be concerned about someone being able to tell if you had done this if that wasnt your intent?

Dont BS us here; being car people we have seen enough cons go around.

I signed up for this site because I LOVE my Mustang. I'm very proud of it and I dump money and spare time into it like nobody's business. If you knew me, we wouldn't be covering this subject.

This is MY car which I intend to keep restoring. I ask questions on this community site when I'm facing a project I don't completely understand. Until I ran into you, people have been helpful and supportive.

I know this conversation went sounth. But if anyone here is searching for tach info, it is VERY easy to pull off all the needles, remove the overlay and replace the unit. I found an auto body multi-tool thaty has just the right flattened claw at Checker Auto Parts. I strongly suggest using a thin cloth between your pry tool and the surface of the overlay. This is also a great time to upgrade to LED bulbs.

BTW: It's unlikely that you will screw up your car doing this.
