Gonna install smoked lights in a 96 coupe, bulb recommendation?
I just bought a 96 Mustang coupe with 100k miles for $2200. Great body condition, engine has never been abused, had to replace the axle seals though, the front breaks, shocks, and get an allignment.
One of the first things I have planned to do to it is swap out the stock headlights for some tinted ones. I made the mistake of purchasing some lights before checking Michigan state law regarding tinted/smoked headlights. I bought this set. Upon reading around, for them to be street legal:
Quote:
Question: Are smoked-out headlight covers legal?
Answer: The Michigan Vehicle Code requires head lamps to emit a white light, with "high-beams" of intensity to reveal persons and vehicles at a distance of at least 350 feet ahead, and low-beams of intensity to reveal persons and vehicles at a distance of at least 100 feet ahead. Since smoked headlamp covers change the color of light, and/or decrease their intensity below the requirements, they should not be used when headlamps are required to be on. However, smoked headlamp covers may be used when headlamps are not on, and not required.
So I went into the police station today, and asked them if these would be street legal. The officer said as long as I test it myself, and make sure the high beams can do 350 ft and the normals 100 ft, I'll be fine. My question is, do I need a special bulb to get those distances since the light will have to cut through the smoked lens? The guy at the local NAPA store (he didn't appear to know much) recommended ether PHILIPS X-TREME POWER 9007 or PHILIPS CRYSTAL VISION ULTRA 9007CV.
Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions on this procedure and which bulbs I should get?

This is the cheapest that I found, a little more then I'm looking to spend right now as I'm also having a guy touch up the spoiler, and getting the insides retinted. Any idea if ether of those 2 bulbs I listed enough will be powerful enough to go the required distances? And if so, would the Crystal Vision ones look somewhat like HID?
My friend has somewhat talked me into a HID system, however he claims the eBay kit he got is working fine. Has anyone here purchased a kit off eBay, and if so which would you recommend? I see they range in all sorts of prices. MI law requires them to be under 5000k.
one thing i wanna tell you about them is to watch what your buying. regular hid kits come with only the low beams. once installed you will really never need to have high beams. the problem is gonna be that the mustangs have the low bean and the high beam on the same bulb. so if you buy just regular hids you wont have any high beams. the other kind of hids are bi-zenon, these type do come with the low/high beams on the same bulb like the regualr head light bulb the car uses, but they usually do run a bit more expensive than regular hids.
Ive been looking into hids but i was worried about the single bulb......ill have to do more snooping into it...it was just a thought to buy em, havent really thought about it too hard, haha
now i might buy some
We have many, many, many satisfied Mustang owners from MF and beyond with our kits.
Why chance it on an Ebay vendor with a PO BOX for returns? That should ring an alarm bell.
