Had similar issue this week with my wifes exp., it would hardly idle but ran fine at higher rpms, it was a vacuum hose. I sprayed some starting fluid on the vacuum lines to help find the leak, replaced and runs like new. It must have been leaking for some time as it had a slight miss, thats all gone now...double check your vac lines.

or not use a explosively flammable liquid might be safer...

Why the hell would you use starter fluid?

x2 on the checking your vac lines. The pcv tubes break down and need to be replaced. I just replaced mine and it fixed my vac lines.

oh i just thought why to use starter fluid... if theres a vacuum leak it sucks it in and changes the way the engine runs so you can find it.

Yeah, you're supposed to use something somewhat flammable so that you can find the leak.

My uncle recommended to use carb and choke cleaner to find the vacuum leak and start with one section of the engine at a time to find the area where there is a leak. Still unable to find one. Are there any specific vacuum lines I should look for that are known to leak? Should I check the metal lines too going from the EGR valve to the back of the engine bay?

You should probably check all of those lines (just as a precaution). However, your spontaneous misfiring is seemingly related to an electrical issue, most specifically, the coil pack. As far as the gas smell, I had that problem at one time, and an associated CEL. It turned out to be a rotted seal on the gas cap. Another thing to check is the charcoal canister under the car (right by the tank). Even the smallest leak in it will prevent the proper amount of gas from getting to the engine and will also cause a very notable gas smell. The only other thing I know of is the fuel pump failing, but I'm going to go ahead and doubt that.

Last night as I was checking for vacuum leaks I noticed one of the plug wires was burnt half way through and not sitting on the plug all the way. It wouldn't go all the way on either. It must have gotten worse because it wasn't this way a week ago when I changed the plugs. So I changed out all the wires and it runs normal again. Thanks everyone for your input
