I hit a large puddle, car died while started later on; Alternator?
Ok well I'll start with the only good part of my night... I picked up these two girls... now to the bad part... pulling out of her little development thingy I mistook a large crater filled with water for a slight bump... so naturally I hit it, doing no more than 5 mph though... my car started bellowing out smoke from underneath from all angles... girl goes on to say "Oops. I forgot to tell you about that." Later on that night cops bust through the bar we're in but I got out without a summons lol... so I went to my car and had the radio on for about 10 mins but the car was off... Drove around another 15 mins got something to eat... hanging out in my car, car on, radio on, heat on, windshield wipers on... my subwoofer turns off... I tried playing with wires, nothing helped... lights started to flicker, I turned them off... so then I decided to turn off the car... however, it didn't restart... I had the key out and everything off, yet my battery, CEL, ABS, and airbag light were still lit, along with the mileage still working... I have an auto-start, but I rarely use it because it never works... my theft light kept blinking and my parking lights kept blinking... my bro came to give me a boost... on the way home my lights begun to flash again so I turned my headlights off and just threw my fog lights on (I have HID's, they're extremely bright), shut the heat, and wipers... so what the hell happened? Alternator? Auto-start? A short somewhere? My car picked the right day to **** up, mid-30 degree temps and cold rain... ugh. I came home and turned off the car, shut it off and turned it on a few times and it worked fine. Thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It wasn't smoke. The water hit your exhaust underneath and caused the steam to rise up all around. Happens to me all the time when I smash through puddles. Where I live it's impossible to not hit them because there are 3 spots where small creeks cross over the road.
Nonetheless, it's probably not good for cold water to splash up and hit hot piping.
one time when i was going to work early to "talk" to one of the girls there i went through a puddle in the entrance not only did i bump the gas to get some sideways action it hit my brake rotors and was steaming like crazy with my stang on the ground like it is it looked so bad a$$ haha
but id definitely say that lil bump shorted some wires. it probably got water on some contacts try leaving battery unplugged for like 30 min and leave to hood open let the things dry off a lil

it is your alternator, but sadly i think you just had misfortune that night, i dont think the puddle did anything to it. i think your stereo system finally decided to blow your alternator that night just because it wanted to lmao
