Question Rebuild 200 cu in

My 200 needs new rings and valve stem seals, etc. I'm being told by engine shops in my area that they will not do this job while the engine is in the car - it has to be removed and carried to them. Seems it will cost me about $1K just to have the engine removed and carried to the shop.

My question is this...can this job be done with the engine still in the vehicle? I do not have an engine hoist, etc., in my garage.

it CAN be done but it takes sometimes twice as long which is why the shop won't do it in the car. they charge you by a book of listed times for a job instead of actual time taken. so if they KNOW it takes twice as long to do something they wont do it because they don't get paid the extra hours.

Makes sense. Think I'll keep looking. Someone suggested that I get some type of engine molly, mystery oil, etc., and put it in because it would reduce the amount of oil leaking past the rings. Ever heard of that? Sounds too good to be true or at best just a band aid approach to a bigger problem.

How bout I buy your 68' from ya and we call it good?

Go to your local parts store or Harbor Freight and buy an engine picker and take it out yourself. Then find a friend with a truck and take it to them.

If you cant find a friend with a truck then rent a truck or box truck from U-Haul (19.99 + insurance) and use that to take the engine to them.

You should build a base that the engine can sit in so that it just doesnt roll around.

I like the you buy it idea, but I just can't part with the old girl right now. Good suggestion about the hoist & truck rental. Sure would save some bucks.

Are you a LAA fan?

Getting the hoist and doing the job yourself would be cheaper in all areas. Look around and see if you can find a motor that has been rebuilt already and see what you can find. OR just slap a nice little 289/302 in there and be done with it. It would be a piece of cake in your car.
