Hi there. I'm new around here. I was hoping someone on here could help me out. I have a 2002 v6 mustang. I bought it two years ago and had emissions problems when I first got it. I took it to Ford and had close to a $1000 worth of work done to make it pass inspection. Now two years later my car is due for inspection again by the end of this month and the damn check engine light has come on, as well as my check gas cap. I've replaced the gas cap once already, I'm going to take it back and get another, maybe its defective? By either way the code that came up was the small emission leak code. I can't afford to take it back into the shop, i'm broke at the moment and if I can't get this inspected I can't afford the tickets either so I'll end up parking it. The other thing is that the car reeks of gas! I can't drive with the windows open because it stinks. When I park and get out there is a strong smell of gas from the rear of the car. No smell of gas under the hood or anything like that its all at the back.
I've had my bf and dad look at the car, neither of them could diagnosis the problem. They checked the hoses and didn't see any problems there. I'm not a big car person, I can change the oil and add fluids but beyond that I don't really have the know how to get under there and work on things myself.
What else could throw this code if the hoses are good and the gas cap is replaced? And why is the damn gas cap light staying on? Are there specific things I can look at (or one of the guys) check out specific parts?

It's most likely just the gas cap is bad. If you put in a locking one, it will fail in a matter of months. Just get a new one, and clear the code, it may clear on it's own. It's a cheap easy place to start. I have an 02 and that's been the only fuel/emissions related issue I've ever had, it's not too uncommon.
Just to help figure out what other issues could be there, what work was done since you've owned the car? How many miles are on it?

I'll try another gas cap and see if that works. I bought the new cap when the light first came on, and had the code cleared. But it came back on with the new cap the next day. I'll try another one and see if helps. I'm concerned about the smell of gas tho, it really stinks...
dont forget to check to see if the vapor canister has been damaged, could be why you smell a lot of gas

What is the emission code? Im guessing a bad o2, a leak or the cats are shot? Mine was running to rich (to much gas) and it destroyed the cats is 18k miles.
If my understanding is correct, the gas tank and fuel lines are slightly pressurized when the car starts (most cars have a idiot warning on the cap, pressurized vapors could explode ect...). The warning light might be due to a lack of pressurization which it reads as a loose gas cap. I'm betting you have a leak somewhere in your fuel system. (Hot vapors around your exhaust, not good).
