Default Deal or No Deal?

This will be my official 2nd post to the boards here. I've been lurking for a week or so now trying to read up as much as I can. I am going to buy my bro-in-laws 99 35th anniversary V6. He's not into cars and he originally bought it as a daily driver. The original owner is a teacher, (who is ALSO a nun!!), that works at the same school my sis-in-law does. Anyway, the car has been sitting in his driveway for quite a while, (a year, maybe more). There is nothing at all wrong with it except it needs a battery and brakes. The aire blows cold but it blows out the heater vents instead of the vents in the dash, (make sense?). The interior is in immaculate shape. No cracks, tears, rips or stains anywhere. It has less that 80k miles on the clock. I'm picking it up for $1500!
I think that's a pretty good deal, right?
Now, after sitting up for so long I figure a fluids change and new tires should come soon after. In fact, it's been sitting so long that the tires are almost completely flat. I should be able to drive it to a station and air them up but not sure how long they'll last after that. Anything else I should have checked?

sounds like a good deal, the a/c may be a loose vacuum hose either in the engine bay or behind the dash. It could probably use a good tune up after sitting that long.

Sounds like a very good deal to me.

Here are a few things that you should do, im probably forgetting a few things though.

1.) Change Oil and Filter
2.) Run some seafoam through the Fuel, crankcase and vacuum into the intake.
3.) Change the fuel filter
4.) Flush the radiator fluid, you can buy a kit that allows you to flush the whole system for cheap from Any autoparts store. I suggest Redline WaterWetter, its a soapy additive that helps prevent cavitation.
5.) Flush the trans fluid if its an auto, change if its a 5spd.
6.) Change the differential fluid.
7.) Check the brake pads and rotors, if its just pads (Like your post sounds like) then thats it, if its rotors too then grabbing a set of vented crossdrilled and slotted Brembos.
8.) Check your soft brake lines for cracks or bulging, replace with SS lines for best performance and long life.
9.) If a 5spd, take note on how the clutch engages and how it feels, you will get a good idea if it needs to be changed or not.
10.) Check your wheel bearings, just change them as they are cheap enough, take care to pack the new ones fully and correctly with grease, or you can buy one of those summitracing wheel bearing no mess packers.
11.) Check your fuses and relays
12.) Check and test all electrical including lights (of course.)
13.) Take note for thuds when moving from a stop, U-joint health check.
14.) If the motor moves way too much from side the side thats the motor mounts.
15.) Check to see if the cooling fan works. You should be able to test this by turning the car on and turning the A/C to MAX and that should turn it on right away, but it doesnt do it for my 96' so I am not 100% about that one ;P
16.) Change the wiper blades.
17.) Check the tie rods by jacking the car up and wiggling the tire up and down and back and forth to check for play. If play is found replace the tie rod. They are cheap.
18.) Check the power rack boots to make sure they arent damaged or missing.
19.) Take the car in for a 4 wheel alignment.
20.) Check the brake fluid and fill as needed.
21.) Check the power steering fluid and flush.
22.) Change your spark plugs.
23.) Check your spark plug wires for damage, replace if damaged.
24.) Check your wiring harness or damage or exposed wires, repair what you can, if there is too much then replace the whole thing.
25.) Recharge the A/C system.

For the best ride quality you really should change your shocks and struts (Tokico D-spec or other shock of your choice, but D-Spec is among the best right now.)
You should also change all the old stock rubber bushings and end links with a poly master kit.

You should spend a long long weekend with the car and detail the paint, engine bay and interior + trunk. I highly suggest buying a claybar kit (Mothers California Gold Clay Bar works great) and claybar the whole car.

Thats about all I can think of, congrats on the good deal and good luck.

Its a used car, what you thought those "56 point check" was just used car dealership hype? oh wait, it is!

The difference between us and them is they say they do it and we actually do it. :}

It might be alot of stuff, but that list will seperate the 100,000 mile motors and the 400,000 mile motors.
