Default Exhaust Q's

I'm planning on bringing my car to an exhaust shop, to get it a true dual exhaust with flowmaster super 40's.

I don't think i'll have enough money to replace the catalytic converters, so i was thinking of cutting right behind the cats. So I would keep the stock cats and remove the rest of the Y pipe.
I'm wondering, do you think the setup would still sound okay with the stock cats on?

And for anyone who has true duals on their v6- if you replaced the catalytic converters, what type of pipe did you get, and how much did the exhaust shop charge you for the whole installation? Parts and everything...

Thanks!

I got flowmaster 40 series and it sounds great....but with your cats, you have 2 cats on both sides that means 4 total have them remove one cat from each side so you only have 2 cats total. Those things weight a bit and hold back a lot of air.

I did the whole exhaust at once. Its a little pricey, but in the long run it will be worth it.

MAC Long Tube Headers Ceramic Coated Part# MACTF6123 359.95
MAC Catalytic H-Pipe 3.8L for 1999-2004 with Long Tube Headers Part# C38990 359.00

For the catback I bought two Borla Pro-XS mufflers and had a shop make it. Luckily, I knew the guys at the shop.

Borla Pro-XS Part# 40352 69.00
Piping and Labor Free

You will also have to get O2 simulators or extenders. Your choise. Extenders are more expensive then simulators.

Well the headers are bolted directly to the heads which is bolted onto the engine, which generates boocoo of heat. Ceramic coating helps them disperse that heat faster. It will also protect them longer against the elements.

Sorry, I can't get you a sound clip, I'm currently deployed overseas and won't return till late september [&o]

I Googled the number for the Borla mufflers I am interested in and got this old thread. Don't you guys with a V6 think 2.5" piping is too large? I would think a 2" system would be fine, actually better as it should allow the velocity of the exhaust gas to remain higher to move quicker. I run a set of Edelbrock LT's, a discontinued Victor series racing version and the stock midpipe, well the back half, and the stock catback. If I was told a catback with free flow mufflers and 2.5" piping would add next to nothing a V6 would see less. I have 11.4:1 compression, Comp cams with 230*/234*, UDP's and a DIY RAI/CAI system with a rare SVO intake with dual 57mm blade TB.
If I had a V6 I would be saving for a supercharger or turbo system and with that you would not need an expensive exhaust system that will not do much at all. I moved my fog lights inboard and used a home heating vent as a scoop and have 4" aluminum piping leading oncoming air into the stock aircan with an S&B filter dropped into it.
Mine is a convertible/automatic. I got this car 3 hyears ago after owning Mitsubishi turbo cars for several years and have a lot to learn about these new American V8's. I spent $2350. on bolt ons and the car went .47 quicker and 4-5mph faster, NOT a good return IMHO as I could do 50whp for that much on a turbo DSM. $2350. would be a good start towards a SC system. Ask ........... Shadowdrake here. He says the first mod should be a SC and then do the bolt ons and he is right if you really want to get 13's from those V6 motors. Cheaper insurance and still the good looks of a Stang with 300+WHP would be really trick. I don't know anything about the Ford V6 but the Buick V6 turbo was the quickest FIREBIRD ever produced much to the chagrin of Poncho diehards I was a Buick guy for most of my young days. I speaking of that one year that the Firebird was a pacecar and had the 4.1 turbo motor with advertised HP of 300 but was actually more like 400. One of Detroits best lies.
FYI, Chevy/GM rated the ZR-1 Vette in '67 at 430HP, 5 less than the tri-powered version with the most HP(435) to "discourage" sales as this was a race car and they had to sell something like 500 units to make it legal for some race class. The ZR-1 made well past 500HP.
Anyways back to the V6 guys get a SC and do not waste your cash as I did and even with a V8 the returns were poor.
