The problem with exploder (and other truck) 8.8's is that they have offset differentials. This knocks the pinion off-center, creating some interesting driveline angles and also moving the differential away from the pinion snubber.

I'd rather (and in fact am going to) use a fox body rear end than one from an exploder. Requires some 5 lug axles and brakes, but those are easy to find in a junkyard, and you're going to have to rebuild the rear anyway before you drop it in.

That said, what kind of power are you looking to push with that 347, and how are you going to drive it? 8.8's will hold up pretty well, but you may need to be thinking about a 9".
