Default time belt change followed my funny sounds

i sold my old 86 ford mustang to a buddy its a 2.3 carbed 4 speed car. it needed a timing belt so we took it apart and put the new belt on it. the timing was a little off so we got the timing light and as i started retarding it after it had been running off and on for about 5 min i got it to about 35 degrees advanced some where in there it started making a sound like rod knock. We had turned the motor over several times to be sure we had oil flow before we cranked it. after that we took the oil sender off and turned it over with the coil off and u can watch it pump oil.
what is this sound?
what should the timing be advanced to?
any help would be great!
