i just heard about this, is it really that beneficial? swap a 351 cam into a 302 and wire the plugs as 351. Anyone ever done this?

the 351w uses a different (and better) firing order, ford started using the 351w firing order on 302's in the roller motors.

so, if the 351 firing order is better, can you put a 351w cam in a 289/302 and just run the 351 firing order?

the HO motor uses the 351w firing order already, keep in mind a mild cam on 351 will be hotter because of the less cubic inchs

here's the theory

you have four cycles: intake, compression, work and exhaust.
through those cycles the camshaft only turns once, but the crankshaft twice.
so the piston is fully up when engine ignites but again when it just pushed out the burned mixture through exhaust valve.

When you fire is regulated by firing order. the valves are regulated by the camshaft.

here's the 289 firing order

1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

and here's the 351

1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

you see the 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th cylinder fired are the same
1-x-x-2-6-x-x-8

and the 5-4 and 3-7 order is just interchanged.

No change on crankshaft, just the valve opening is turned at 180 degrees on cam on those 4 cylinders. firing order changed, job done.

What is the benefit of the different firing order? More horespower? Better gas mileage? The car will magically wash and wax itself?
