Default 2000 3.8 litre thermostat issues

So, my friend in her 00 sunburst gold v6 (prettttty car lol) overheated in traffic. I figure it's the thermostat cuz the car is getting up there in miles... what tools are needed to replace the thermostat? any other tips? I've never replaced a thermo before, but am mechanically inclined lol

first you need a hot knife to cut the old thermostat out, then we can talk about installing it

so easy just need a pair of pliers i use robogrip, pull the tension thing back and then the hose should come off. Once that is done you can pull the old one out and put the new one on... that simple. Although mine leaked so i put some of the sealant maker stuff on it and it is AOK.

Make sure to get as much air out of the system afterword as possible. You can very easily get a air bubble in the cooling system when you replace the thermo.

If it were Rmodel, he'd just shoot it off, and hope not to hit his leg!
