Usually the more engine hp/tq is the less aggressively it will be geared. The CTS-V may not have had the low/mid range power so the 3.73 was more fitting. Sometimes tranny gearing can play a role, like '03-'04 Machs and Cobras. Both have 3.55s, but 1st gear in the Mach's 5 spd. is 3.38, and just 2.97 1st gear for the Cobra's 6 spd. Again, the car with less power gets the needed steeper gear. '07-'09 GT500 is 3.31, 2010 is 3.55 with a taller .50 6th gear. 1/4 mi. got quicker while MPG went up. 3.73s are not available on GT500, only optional on GT and standard on KR and Super Snakes.
