Probably not, if it isn't venting. The "gauge" you have is pretty lame, though. Go in the kitchen. Get the digital cooking thermometer. Tape it to the upper hose, away from the fan. Warm the engine all the way up, on a short drive, whatever. Check the temp. Put the thermometer back. Don't get caught.
