clay bars are abrasive, and they all have different levels of how abrasive they are. Most claybars you get at the local auto store are "mild" and will remove wax as they are intended to be used annually or semi-annually. You can buy fine or ultra fine grade of claybars that can be used monthly and they won't strip wax.

There are plenty of info on clay bars out there, read up and you will see.
