I know we're all expecting the 5.0 for '11 but what is the word on the street for the Ecoboost? Ford has publicly stated they will have an ecoboost in every model within the next few years and I've heard talk that the GT will have a turbo 6 rather than a v8. I would cry on this day, but perhaps the "market" is ready for this move. A v8 would likely still be in shelby's, which aren't TOO much more.

 

I doubt Ecoboost will replace the V8... definitely not til the new MPG requirements are in effect.

 

I really don't care what engine is in it, as long as it is fast.

Turbo cars generally require 91 octane. Also a turbo V6 isn't going to be much better than a V8 on MPG. The recent review of the SHO was showing some V8-like gas mileage.

 

The 2010 Taurus Sho does take 91 octane but it gets much better gas mileage than a v8 17mpg city and 25mpg highway. Unless you purposely drive slow you won't get that in a v8. Its pretty close to what I get in my v6. Reviews almost always have a low [B]observed[B] fuel economy because that includes performance testing, not just everyday driving.

The ratings are based EPA city/highway driving, no performance driving involved. City driving, stop and go traffic....Highway driving...Cruising at 70. No WOT turns, etc. No performance.

 

Take a look at the weight of the new Taurus. It's a 4000lb car, and it gets comparable mileage to the 500 pound lighter Mustang GT, while making more power.

The same engine in the Mustang would return 2-3mpg better in the city and highway and it would be a faster car. Yeah, it'll take the slightly more expensive gasoline.

But just wait...once people start doing bolt-ons to that turbo-6...it's going to be an absolutely killer engine. Turbo applications respond VERY well to a simple intake/exhaust + tune. For example, you can take a new non-STi WRX, at 265hp, and get it up to 320hp doing nothing but intake, exhaust, and a tune, making it significantly faster than the STi....or our beloved Mustang GT.

A 365hp Turbo-6 would likely be able to reach ~430hp with just those simple modifications, plus it would have better torque characteristics than even the coyote. Of course, it won't sound the same, but interesting things can be done with the V6 noise.

 

Since it will be the "new age" of the next generation of cars, either way is good with for them. I would drive both the v8 and the ecoboost v6. . .
