I have 06 Mustang GT with approx 65,000 miles and within the last 2-3 months, I have noticed a very slight misfire especially around the mid-range RPM's. I really didn't give it alot of thought until my engine light came on today and I hook up my diablo sport tuner and it reads a PO 340 camshaft position code (sensor A circuit bank 1 or single sensor) and P1000 OBD systems readiness code. Could this be a major problem or am I worrying over nothing. The only thing that I have done was I cleaned the oxygen sensor and throttle bottle sensors with a name brand cleaner. It fired right up after cleaning them and that was about 2 weeks ago. Do I need to get a new sensor and replace it and what do they cost.

Alternator. The voltage regulator is going out.

Exact same thing happened with mine a few weeks ago. I'd get mis-fires, the P0340 code, and I'd watch my voltage drop down into the low 12's.

I can't believe this problem is still so common. its the dreaded bad alternator design in the 05's, 06's and some 07's. your alternator will need to be replaced soon. i'm not sure about the P1000. see if the problem persists after you change your alternator.

Thanks for the info. This is a great web site and every time I have had a problem the replies I get back are usually correct. I'll go get my alternator checked out and hopefully that will fix it. Thanks for the help.

No so sure you can get it checked that easily.. The problem is a bad diode in the alt. that causes the p0340 code. The cam sensor see's a voltage change and throws a code. Just buy a new alt. trust me..I just did it myself a few months ago. Misses and codes gone.

Getting the alternator checked is easy. Just run it up to Orielly's Murray's, PepBoys, or whoever your chain autoparts store is. They can hook it up and verify the bad diode. Then find an Alternator shop in town, and take it in to them to have it re-built.

I got mine done for under $60 dollars, and about an hour and a half of my time. Way better deal than buying a new one and waiting days for it hoping your alternator isn't gonna crap out completely.

I called the local Ford Dealer and talked with the service dept. and they stated that there is Ford TSB concerning this very problem. They said that I need to come in and have the car checked out with their computer and run something called a ripple frequency test which takes about a hour. The service tech stated that only their computer could detect the problem with the alternator or it could be something else. Does anyone know about this TSB concerning the PO340 camshaft position code? It applies not only to the Mustang but other vehicles like the F-150's and etc.

If you're driving an '06 with 65K on the clock you're way out of warranty. The dealership just wants to get your money. Seriously. I drove to O'Rielly's they hooked a handheld diagnostic tool up under the hood for 15 seconds and told me my diode was shot, which is precisely what the problem with these things is. And it was free.

Ford will also try to sell you a new alternator for something like $400 and change. Because they want your money. Take it to a local alternator shop, support small business in your community and save yourself $300+ in the process.

They were however NOT lying about the TSB. There is one for our cars, and the part IS replaceable under new car warranty. Otherwise, you're paying out of pocket for the diagnostic, the part, and the labor, all at what Ford wants to charge you. Since you're well out of warranty...

don't pay for diagnostics and all that other stuff. it is 99.999999999% it is the alternator. search these boards and you will see it was 100% of the time the alternator. Find a local shop or install it yourself. If you are charged more that $450, than you are being overcharged. A new alt will cost around $380 with 1 hour install.
