Default How much HP can a T5 handle?

Hi guys. I bought a rebuilt T5 yesterday from a guy who also has an all new 302 30 over w/ a big cam, 4 barrel edelbrock intake, 600 holley carb, msd distributor, new roller rockers.. flat top pistons, 351 heads that were ported, it has all new lifters, cam bearings, timing chain and high volume oil pump... he is saying this thing puts out close to 475 hp. Does this seem right?? It is great deal (price wise) and regardless of power, i just dont want to blow up the transmission.

I also have the availability of building a 351w or 302 roller, this is going in a 68 mustang. I want it to be a street car, not a drag car; I want power and I dont want to have to baby the shifter it's whole life. What to do??

i wouldnt buy a t5 for one the stock t5 only could handle the factory 300 ft lb of torque but if you do bu it there are places like a company called tick shift were they take your t5 and rebuild it to handle more horsepower i think they have three stages you can choose from.

There is also a place called promotion performance that sells t5's I got mine for $930 shipped and I got the t5 cobra upgrade that handles almost 400ft lbs of tq. I love it

depends on how you drive it, I've seen stock 5.0HOs snap T5s and others pushing 375 ft-lbs fine

Depends on the shape the transmission is in & how you shift it. They can hold up to quite a bit if you shift correctly. I have a few friends including myself who have ran them behind a h/c/i 302. One which saw the strip on a weekly basis with radials. Another friend has a 4 cylinder t5 behind his 393w... then again I had a friend with one behind his stock 5.0 that went through 4 t5's before selling the car.

according to my manual trans books the t5 is a "performance" transmission, i know, funny right?. well according to the book its rated at 300 ft lbs and thats about what a stock mustang makes. So anything more than bolt ons and a decent h/c/i and its a ticking time bomb imo.

my buddy had a STOCK '87 that he broke 3 trans in under a year. he did beat the **** out of it tho.
