Default How much HP does your 289 have?

just curious as to how much you guys are getting out of a 289. i realize some of you diehards/mechanics are prolly getting a lot and some others are just keeping it more stock. just trying to get some type of average for that engine. and if you have a stroker 289 just mention it.
i have a 289 A code. after it comes back from the shop next week the guy said i should have somewhere in the neighborhood of 300hp.

i have added :
tri Y headers
flowmaster 40 exhaust
voodoo cam
new carb---not exactly sure what it is
new air intake manifold

thats not a 300 hp combo

hardly 200 without serious work, or new heads

289's biggest bottle neck is the exhaust ports in the cast heads.

Default Just give your wife the phone number of your engine builder.

I just gave my wife the phone number of my engine builder. He's looking at a 289 or a 302 for my 66. I'm hoping my wife will call him with a credit card number for xmas.

The engine builder said something about just getting a different cam shaft (difference between a 302 and 289 maybe?).

302 and 289 cams are virtually the same.... just different ends of the spectrum (if that makes sense) eg, the wild 289 cam is a mild 302 cam.

200 hp after all that work??? they came with 225 stock......i dont see how that is possible. i have never dynoed the car. i have raced many cars and have beat 350z , 98 style mustangs, and other sports cars that have more than 250 hp.....

I suspect that different measures of "horsepower" are being spoken here. SAE gross (225, crank), probably SAE net (190-ish), possibly a measurement at the wheels. Comparing just the numbers doesn't help until everybody is speaking the same language.

That said, I'd guess you might be up around where the K-code engine was, assuming a good rebuild and a little fine tuning of the carb and ignition. Call it 275 SAE gross/235 SAE net.

Somebody with better knowledge of what Shelby did to get a claimed 306 might be able to justify another number for you if that sort of work was also done to your engine.

Don't forget that a '65 Mustang is a relative lightweight compared to almost anything recently sold with either a V8 or 250+ horsepower. And while the 289's torque was clearly on the weak side back in the mid-60's (compared to, say, the 327 SBC), it's still going to be higher than what anybody's normally aspirated 2.7- to 3-liter V6 puts out.

ford's claimed 225 hp stock was more like 190, if that.
HP is a subject often exaggerated, sorta like the concept of why women are so bad with measurements, they've been told 5 inches in 9 inches for years.
