i have searched and searched i have a 88 2.3l distributor motor i changed the timing belt when i took it off put the motor on tdc and everything lined up i put the new belt on turned themotor over twice then put the motor back on top dead center and the camshaft mark is lined up on the first mark instead of the one in the middle the crank is dead on and the rotor button is before the number one plug on the cap now it wont start up jus pops a little how do i get it back on time do i loosen the distr hold down bolt and spin is or what thanks for the help

Here's the timing belt thread. Sounds like the dist is a tooth off. Double check.

its non interference. put the engine on tdc-crank the cam clockwise til its index lines up w timing marks. turn the aux shaft the same.

next-remove the spout, loosen the distr hold down enough to be able to minutely adjust distr. use timing light and set to 10* btdc for base timing.

when you put the belt on, make sure all the slack is on the side of the tensioner before you release it or else it will advance the cam and distr in relation to tdc. let the tensioner take the slack out and turn engine over by hand two revolutions and check the timing index marks. if they check out tighten tensioner then proceed to distributor timing.

if you dont have factory timing marks use the string method instead. hope this down n dirty helps.

make sure you use the timing mark that is cast into the front cover for timing belt, not the dist. timing mark on the timing belt cover

there is a "notch" on the factory pulley that points to a "cut out" on the inner timing cover(pot aluminum). i forgot to mention that... *blush* esslinger power pulley plus timing pointer ftw. i dont use factory anything for timing. also-use a good timing light!

i prefer the MT1241 snapon analog advance timing light. you can pick em up on ebay for $50-100 dollars. great buy and easy to use. plus the whole lifetime warrenty is a steal. shameless plug. anyways you just set the dial to desired degree of timing and it will flash properly-really cool. just set the light then crank the distr til the pulse flashes when everything lines up w the proper marks. by spinning it you can also view your timing at a certain rpm. ie 32* btdc @ 3000 rpm on your sbf. => k, nuff tool tech. you can always use an el cheapo light. go bust some knuckles and let us know.
