Coyote V8 Firing Order
Hi Guys,
Just a curious question that I was hoping some of you engine gurus could shed some light on.
The new 2011 5.0L is based upon the modular engine so that it uses the same tooling etc. I have read that the bore spacing (not size), rod length, etc is the same as the 4.6L which makes sense.
I have also read that the new Coyote engine uses the old Ford Flathead V8 firing order. This is different than any previous modulare V8 and also the old Ford pushrod small blocks.
Does anyone know why this engine uses the firing order from the flathead V8's? What are the advantages/disadvantages of various firing orders related to engine sound, vibration, free reving, etc.?
I am just curious why Ford would use a different firing order. Inquiring minds want to know......

Variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust sides now with 4 valves per cylinder would be my guess why they changed the firing order. They also incorporated a tubular type manifold (think headers) unlike previous cars that had cast-iron brick style designs.
Firing order can be used to better balance a motor to reduce vibration and noise, with all the new stuff on the 5.0 they can set the timing order to better fit with making more power vs compensating for NVH or noise.
5.0 from Ford 412 HP 380 TQ
4.6 from ford 315 hp 325 tq
