Default Deck lid tension rod installation tips

I just bought a 66 convertible and the deck lid tension rod didn't seem to be doing a thing. It certainly wasn't holding up the deck lid up so I took it out to see what the problem was. It appears to be OK so I want to put it back in and hopefully adjust it so it will actually do something! My question is how do go about installing it. With the deck lid up the rod will be under maximum tension and that will make it difficult install. So how do I do it??? Thanks.
