Hey all,

I'm a potentially new Mustang owner. I have the opportunity to purchase a 2005 Mustang GT with 95,000 miles. The price is right for the mileage.

Is it dumb to get a high-mileage GT? Should I just look for a V6 for the same price and 30,000 less miles? How reliable are Mustangs after the 100,000 mile mark? The clutch/shifting feels solid -- there's no problems there.

I'd rather pay extra money to get a car that's less likely to be abused, than a car that is a good deal and more used...imo

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a car with that mileage so long as I had acces to service history. I work at a Ford Dealership in service. I have seen at least a half dozen vehicles in the last 1.5 years of my job getting their first oil change after 35,000+ kilometers ( 20k+ miles) and many more cars that see "extended service intervals" beyond whats recomended. With service history I wouldn't be worried...without it it's a bit of a crapshoot.

How many owners? If just one, they probably took decent care of it. Otherwise they would have shifted it on to someone else.

Get a CarFax on it. Not sure how reliable they are, but if something dodgey shows up, then you can look into it.

Not everything shows up on carfax. When I bought mine it was raining and kind of cloudy so I wasn't able to get a good look at the paint and what not. Turns out someone's done some paint work on the front bumper, passenger rear quarter panel and door and possibly the hood of mine. Because if you know cars even somewhat you can tell the idiot didn't do much prep whatsoever. Buuuut it was a good deal so I'm still happy. But look for a carfax and history or oasis report. I wouldn't have a problem buying one over 100k.

May we know the price you're being offered the car at? Also, is it an automatic or manual? Hopefully the GT you speak of is well documented and is a one-owner too. A 65,000 mile V6 isn't a spring chicken either and from my experiences the modular V-8 in the GT is pretty reliable(all Crown Vic cop cars are 4.6L V-8s, which become taxi cabs after they're auctioned off, usually with over 75,000 miles). Ask if you can take the GT to mechanic to have it assessed.
