The water pump is gone, so im gonna change it along with the timing cover gasket(leaking). Which sealant should i use on the waterpump/timing cover gaskets and do i put it on both sides of the gasket? I searched on this, but found alot of mixed info. I definatly only want to do this job ONCE. Thanks guys!!

I never use any unless something is visually wrong with one of the components and I don't have the resources or time available to replace it. Many many jobs done, no leaks yet. Proper torque, clean surfaces, good brand gaskets... that's all you need.

If you absolutely must, or just want the reassurance, nothing beats good 'ol black RTV. A very thin bead around the gasket edge will ensure a proper seal and help maintain leaks that might otherwise show up due to bad components, such as a warped timing cover, tiny crack in a gasket, etc.

Be aware that adding silicone sealants to cooling system gaskets is otherwise not recommended, because of their capability to completely clog coolant passages should it break free.

i always use black rtv on one side of the gasket.just a very thin layer of it

I use permatex's "the right stuff" works good, with these older rides often the timing cover surface and water pump surface, if a reman one is purchased have small imperfections such as pitting and the sealant helps take up the space

ok, so i'll just put some black rtv or the permatex good stuff on one side of the gasket. The water pump i ordered is the ford one. I really wanted to change the timing chain too, but just can't afford it. My car only has a 120K on it, so i think the timing chain should be ok.
