I have installed the Ron Francis wiring harness system in my 68 coupe. One thing the system does not address is the AMP Gauge, according to the diagrams I have, the two wires splice together and run to the positive side of the starter solenoid and to the alternator. Is this correct?

I am not totally grasping what you are saying UNLESS they mean to connect these two wires together in the case of no Ammeter being used. An Ammeter must be in SERIES so these two wires, one from the starter solenoid which in practice is the hot side of the battery, to the alternator which is another hot, would provide the connection for charging current from the alternator to the battery. With the Ammeter in SERIES with this circuit, it is then transferring that current but measuring it as it goes.

An Ammeter is basically a short, so connecting it in series is what you want. If after it is in the circuit it reads backwards, you will need to reverse the leads on the Ammeter.

Hi,
That is right but your drawing is wrong. The amp meter is working of the small voltage drop across all that wiring. The amp gauge isnt carrying all that current like you would think. Its really a voltmeter not an amp meter.
The more current going through the charging wire the higher the voltage drop. Thats why the charge wire is so small. You upgrade the wire and your amp meter will stop working.

Yes, ANY Ammeter is nothing but a voltmeter across a very low, high wattage fixed resistance. Usually something like .1 Ohms. I understand what you're saying then and the drawing with the yellow wire being the resistor makes total sense. Does it make sense to you mortman?

I was scratching my head for a day with this one. But the trick was looking at the gauge. It shows the coil not the resistor.

and the field wire off the alternator to the voltage regulator, in the diagram that one wire is missing? what happens if i wire wrong? i dont want to go kaboom.

Ron Francis wont send wiring for an amp gauge unless you specifically ask, but, I THINK if you run the big wire from the RON FRANCIS panel to the battery/+side of the solenoid THROUGH the shunt in your AMP GAUGE it may work.

I would call Ron Francis and ask a tech to be sure, it is free....
