My windshield is leaking really bad from where the seal meets the framing. There is some kind of black tar looking stuff in there already. Just wondering what I can use to seal this up. I just purchased the car a couple months ago, and would like to be able to be ok in a rain storm. Thanks.

It's called 3M Glass Bedding Compound, and should completely fill the slot. The groove with the glass should also have it. Most glass shops are too cheap to use enough, and leaks result.

Is the water getting on top of the dash or running underneath it?

it may not be the window seal unless its obvious. If its not then it could be from the seam joints in the body just ahead of the cowl. These joints are spot welded and the gap was filled with a sealant. This sealant becomes hard and cracks over time and allows water to get into the car. It is an easy fix simply remove the fenders and old sealant, Clean paint and then reseal.

If it is the window thats an easy fix too...remove the trim, cut the gasket, push out glass, clean channel, fix rust holes in channel, replace all the gasket and re-seat the window and re fill channel as 2+2GT described.

Finally it could be a cowl vent...easy test is to pour water into the vent and see if it runs into the car...the fix not so easy.

my old '68 had this problem. dripped right on top of driver and was so bad i kept a bath towel in car to use when it rained. i was too low on $$$ to ever get it fixed and the resultant damp air in the car really did damage to a lot of the interior. suggest you get it fixed pronto.

it appears to be leaking from the top of the windshield and running down the a-pillar on both sides. It does leak a little up at the rear view mirror. I dumped water in both cowls and nothing came in the car (thank god). I will purchase some of that compound and see if it works, I want to change the chrome trim around the windshield anyways. The back window leaks a little as well, but not near as bad as the windshield.

Put new sealer in the glass groove, then press the seal against the glass and fill the slot with sealer. All the old sealer should be removed, if you can.
