Default 295/45/18 vs. 285/40/18

First of all, I had a set of 20's on my '05 Gt vert and I didn't realize how terrible they rode until I put my 17" stockers back on. Unbelievable night and day difference! So now I want to order a set of 18" FR500's and can't decide what size to go woth out back. I have 4.10's and kinda like the mean look of the larger tires in the rear but are there any cons? Anybody got pics? Thanks guys.

295/45 is going to be noticeably taller then the 285/40. No con is is the overall tire diameter is great er then the standard then it shrinks your gear ratio so your 4.10 will act like 3.90 for example.

I was also on the fence between the two sizes but decided on the 285/40/18 as it's nearly stock size and as SpartaPerformance stated, gear ratio would have affected with the 295/45/18.

295/45/18 is huge. Not only does it drop your gear ratio but it adds extra rotating mass to the driveline. The car will accelerate slower.

Ideally, you want to go with the smallest diameter and lightest wheel/tire setup you can get away with (ie, maintain traction) to maximize performance. That is, if it is your main concern.

Those FR500 wheels are probably boat anchors. I bet they weigh easily 23 lbs. Probably more.

Not really concerned about performance as much as looks. The car works good with the 4.10, tuner, and CAI and I like the idea of gaining some gear as the 4.10's are steep. I'd actually like to see some cars with both those sizes.

As much as I like the taller sidewall of the 45's, I'd go with the 285/40's simply due to remaining closer to the stock OD. And you'll want 255's up front.

Just put on the 295's, so here's what I can tell you so far. Looks amazing on stock springs, definatley gives her an oldschool look. They are heavy as a mf'er so from a performance standpoint, not your first choice...but the grip is awesome, and that's gotta count for something with your current gear. I got them with this in mind as I plan to swap my gear to a 3.73 this summer which should drop it to 3.5? with the bigger tire, good for everyday fun i would think. Then go back to the stockers at the track to get maximum benefit of the new gear for that fun
The con in my eyes so far is gonna be brake wear. You can tell the brakes are working harder to stop all that meat, and only time will tell how big of an impact they will make on the brake pads/rotors...nothing some powerslots and pads can't handle though.
Bottom line if you are not dropped and want the looks, get them. If I was already dropped and inch or more, I would get the 285's. Hope this helps.

get the 285/40/18s. they are basically the same width (11.42" vs 11.54"), just arent super tall and heavy like the 295/45/18s.
