Hey everyone I am new to this and am just starting to try to learn stuff about cars,anyways i have a 2002 mustang and lately when i turn the wheel at slow speeds(0mph-25mph) i can hear a screeching metallic noise. When i let go of the wheel and drive straight i can still hear the noise whenever i hit bumps in the road. The funny thing is at fast speeds this noise goes away, I though it may be a bad power steering pump but when i went outside to test my car's suspension, i rocked and the left side and it was good however i went to my right side and it started to make the noise. I'm assuming this is a suspension issue but am not sure, also how can you tell if its a shock or strut issue? and is there anything else it could be? Thanks by the way

it could be a lot of things. I would say maybe get a buddy or someone to turn the steering wheel back and forth while you try to find where the sound is coming from. maybe even post up a video so we can take some guesses

I sent my car to the shop yesterday evening for the same squeaks and some other steering issues. I know they are going to switch out one of the inner tie rods, and they are going to check out all the bushings on the rack and pinion. My turning squeak seems to be coming from inside the rack. Also I found that it was my right shock by lubing ONLY the shock. This stopped the noise. If it doesn't stop it then it's something else.

I also noticed that my steering wheel had picked up a lot of play lately. Are you having any problems with that?

Lastly, I don't want to jack your thread so if you don't want this link here, tell me and I'll take it down. I posted somewhat the same issues a while back, you just described the squeaks better than me. You can see what petrock suggests. https://mustangforums.com/forum/v6-1...omponents.html

Hey thanks All4one for suggesting to lube the shock hopefully that will fix the squeaking i hear. As far as my steering goes at slow speeds i can still turn the wheel rather easy with no trouble, since that's not giving me any trouble at all, i'm gonna assume it's not the power steering pump. However when i turn the wheel it does make the noise so maybe a steering rod issue, also maybe tie rods or bushings on the right side may be on the fritz? How much would those be to replace and how difficult is it to replace? Thanks again by the way

tie rods and rack bushings are pretty easy to replace. if you are going to replace one of each id suggest doing the other side too, they usually wear out at the same time. if youre going to do tie rods, make sure you mark where the tie rod was positioned to possibly save yourself from getting a new alignment

Thanks 03shadow, i know a kid with a very nice 03 boss so i'm gonna refer to him as well since he constantly takes parts on and off his car just for fun. I really don't know much about working on cars so i appreciate the advice and have been suggesting what you guys have said to him (still waiting on a response). Hopefully this issue can be resolved rather easily and won't break my bank...thanks again

and as for price, rockauto.com has them for the cheapest based on my research. Everyone I've talked to said for tie rods that there is really not a difference in quality between MOOG and lower brands like master pro.

Very common...there are dozens of TSB's on it...mine has been creaking and light clunking for years...mechanics have NO idea what is wrong....have a buddy who basically rebuilt his front suspension and its still creaking. Yours sounds pretty bad though so i would think something bigger is going on
