Traction issues on my newest pony
Hey everybody, I have been a Mustang enthusiast for a long time and have owned five of them. I just recently bought a 06' GT with a 5-speed... A lot different than the fox body's that I am used to! I went to take it for the first real drive, and it spun off the line pretty good (not the problem), it caught at around 3000 RPMs, but then once I shifted into second to run through the gear, the car went completely sideways... I can ride through more than a chirp or a little spin, but I almost lost it when the car went from straight to 90 degrees sideways. It is stock (flowmaster exhaust) with 17K miles and brand new Pirelli PZero tires on it. I didnt put those on because I would have gone bigger than 235/55/17. So, what can I do to get rid of this absurd slip when I hit second gear? It has the stock 17x8 Bullitt wheels, and after research some say I can wrap a 275 tire around it, while others say that 255 is the biggest. I will buy the tires, but 255 isnt too big of a jump from 235's. Will tires alone fix these cars traction problems? My 90' Supercharged LX (11.90) doesnt worry me like this car. Please help!?!? I can tell you the PZeros don't have much grip. Hell, I can get my 4.0 v6 sideways with them. I'm going for Continental Extreme Contact DW's soon. You'll need to modify your suspension as well, but I can't comment on that - no real experience.

I spun my daughters 05' GT in 2 circles on Pirelli PZero when we first got it. It was like driving on ice. Tires should help. UCA and LCA should really help. I can keep our 11' with over 500 rwhp under control better than the 05'.

Thanks for the replies fellas! So tires and control arms.. What is the biggest tire that you can fit on the Bullitt 17x8? I was hearing great things about the Nitto drag radials, but would I need a bigger rim to fit 275/40/17's? Also which CA's work best on these bodies?

There are a lot of different tires out there that have more grip than what you are running now. If you don't want to get new tires though, consider some suspension mods like aftermarket control arms. However, those will make your car ride worse than what it is now. With stickier tires, I don't think they will have as negative an impact on overall ride quality.
