Hi, so i have a 2004 mustang v6 3.9L 40th anniversary addition and i need to change the fluid in the power steering pump. it looks right now like a dark dark brown and i just put the pump in like 6 months or so ago, so i was going to put a premium fluid in. any suggestions and guides to help me solve my problem?

Actually I'm thinking of doing the same exact thing. Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but can't you just pull the return line off the pump and just cycle fluid through with the car running. Obvious you'd have to keep the reservoir full or bad things happen.

This seems like it might take up quite a bit of fluid so maybe there is another way.
Just something I came up with one day.

I took off the return line down at the radiator and let it drain all of it out, then start the car, moved the wheel back and forth until it got hard to move, reconnected the line to the radiator and refilled the resevoir. started the car up and had a friend pour more fluid into the resevoir as needed, once it wasn't losing any more fluid, jack up the front end and move the wheel from lock to lock to bleed the system. Should be good to roll

Power steering fluid is going to get dark and brown right away. If there's no problem with the steering itself, you're just wasting your money by "flushing" it.

my steering is starting to get alittle strange so i thought i would swap out the fluid. plus im not running the suggested fluid. the suggested fluid for my 2004 mustang v6 automatic is to run the transmission fluid through. maybe it is thicker and works smoother or something. because its a new pump... it shouldnt be messed up already.

It runs to the driver side corner of the radiator, it cools the fluid. Your return line connects from the power steering to the lower driver side of the radiator, atleast on mine it does.

I've always done it my self. I have one of those suction hand pumps that looks like a grease gun with a long flexible clear rubber tubing. I have to suck it out and refill it like 3 times until it appears a fresh clean looking pink. Sometimes, I connect an even thinner piece of tubing at the very end of the suction hose for deeper access.. I have always used Mobil1 automatic trans fluid too. Don't know if another single person uses Mobil1 in the p.s. fluid sump. Has worked for me many years.

If you can afford it, get a "BG Fush" Ask the shop if they have a BG machine to do it. If not, find a place does have a BG flush machine system. Most service shops all have them and most dealerships now use BG flush machines. Flushing with Mobil1 automatic transmission fluid might be a little costly but do some research, call your Mustang shop and reiterate to them what I told you. 2nd, 3rd, 4th opinions are always great. -Good luck & update this thread please.
