Default any ideas about squeaking noise?

i just bought a 1996 mustang GT convertible with 93k miles on it. when driving down the road I hear at periodic squeak squeak squeak. the sound goes away when I lightly tap and hold brakes on. My guess is I need new rear brake rotors

Usually when the wear indicator starts contacting the rotor, it will do exactly what you described. Better sooner than later, take a look at your pads before throwing parts at it, if possible mic your rotors at the same time. Also check your bearings. On a few rare occasions I've had the symptom your describing at work, and found a bearing being the root cause. Are you doing your own work?

^+1 It is most likely the brake pads but look at them before you go out and buy parts only to find it's not the issue.

Ohhh welcome to my world. I've the problem for over a year and just got rid of it. I replaced pads, rotors, calipers and it still kept coming back. Found out last week the problem was my axel bearings! I changed them out and haven't heard that squeak since.

my 96 GT has been in the body shop for a week getting the hood and front bumper repainted. i should have it back mar 5th or 6th. The owner of the small shop is 71 and had eye surgery (cataract removed) Mar 1st. after i get it back I can start diagnosing.
I have some new brake pads and a new rear wheel bearing and seal ready to install
