Default Could I Have the Wrong Water Pump On?

I have a 68 with a 302 and I ordered a new pump without thinking to look. The current one has the lower outlet on the driver side and almost every pump I see (including the one that arrived) is on the passenger side. I have overheating issues if I try to run my A/C in the mid 80s and above (so pointless) and I typically get hot at highway speeds above 65.

1) Could the wrong pump be in the all this time (previous owner made some questionable decisions)?

2) Could the engine not be original after all?

3) How can I tell if I have the right belt direction setup? Currently the water pump and alternator (pass side) are grouped together. Everything is moving clockwise I believe.

You have a post 69 water pump on your car. 69 and earlier small blocks have the inlet on the passenger side. You ordered a water pump for a 68 and that's what they sent you.
With your overheating problems, now seems like a perfect time to unscrew that cobbled together setup and take it back to factory. Find yourself a 69-earlier pulley & bracket setup. You would need to change over your radiator too but then it would be right.

I might just have a spare setup laying around.

So the pump is flowing in the wrong direction or not? I have an aftermarket AC and the pulleys and an aftermarket radiator. If possible, I dont want to spend hundreds to switch back to factor if I can just find a pump that flows in the right direction.

How do I tell if the pump I have on still is pumping in the right direction?

The more I read the more it looks like either I have the wrong pump on their or I have a later that 69 302 in there. Praying its the pump which would solve a lot of issue.

The water rotation on the right and left hand small block Ford water pumps of the era is the same.

In through the bottom out through the top.

Here's a nifty link I just found.

So essentially the impeller turns the same way but the post 69 had the driver side outlet right? So I should be fine but I will need to look at say 70s pump

vs 68
