Default How good is the pre 93 AOD?

I have a 71 351C Mach1 with a C6. The engine was recently rebuilt into a 408 stroker. I would like to swap out the transmission to an AOD. I would like to buy a used pre 93' AOD and install it. Trying to figure out if the standard AOD is strong enough without a rebuild. It's not going to be raced just a little fun at the stop signs.

If it was my car I wouldn't use an AOD. What is it you don't like about the C6? If your looking for something strong You'll want to stick with what you have.

I was hoping the AOD would allow me to change the rear gear to a 3.90 instead of the 3.31 gear. I'm afraid the 3.90 would cause me to run to many rpms. Just wanting to have a little fun off the line. Don't spend to much time on the interstate but don't want to jackup the rpm's too much.

I doubt it's a daily driver. I wouldn't worry about a few extra RPMs.

Just did a rpm calculator. Looks like 500 extra rpms at 65 mph between the 3.31 and a 3.90. May just stay with what I have.

I don't get it or see it. I have known a lot of people who had no issue with their AOD's.....My naighbor has an awesome black 88 coupe 5.0 AOD, with over 250 grand on it, only two filter changes. Still runs strong. He also autocrossed this car for several years.

Is it that people just want a manual? My two have been solid.....My cars have just been drivers, not racers, with only the occassional fun at stoplights or stop signs. No problems. Just don't get the dislike of them...

If I were you I would. If you do drive on the highway occassionally, the high rpms make it noisier and screw your gas mileage. If I had a classic I'd throw either a 5 speed or an AOD in it. But I would consider the AOD.....

And that my friend is why you don't see it...................try throwing 4:10's and above at them, throwing some power to them and see where the OD band goes, I 've seen IT PLENTY OF TIMES FIRST HAND with the street/strip guys I deal with who like the best of both worlds
