Default Will a 2006-2009 4.0 fit in a 2005 Mustang

My Mustang threw the timing chains so I have to replace the engine. Lot's of 06-09 engines available but will they fit in a2005 auto? I know the flex plate and torque converter are different but is that the only difference?

Rivets,

'05-09 are all basically the same car. If you have a 2005 V6 then any engine from that range will fit.

Why do you think flex plate changed in 06', was this part of an engineering change?

Tom

The two clues are that all the wrecking yards list the 2005 engine as being unique and this thread indicates that at least the flex plate is different.

My question is why would you replace it with another V6? Do a V8 swap if you can. You can probably find a 4.6 from a GT and drop it in. You won't even need to do much to it if you use a complete engine from a GT and you have an auto, and it would be even easier if you found a GT in a scrapyard with all the necessary parts, like the rear end, driveshaft, computer, etc.

Wow! Ok that TC looks vastly different in that other post. Good luck with your motor swap.

Maybe 2005 motors won't be hard to find so you can keep your tranny parts?

Anything different is going to be on your old motor so I wouldn't worry about it.

The 05's were different in the TBI, but otherwise, other than 1 sensor, I don't remember anything else we switch when I helped out a friend with his engine. He blew out the rt side chain cassette, so it was remove the engine. While we had it out, he found another engine from an 08 from somewhere and we switched it out. I just don't remember us having any big problems with the exchange. Both were 4.0's, and automatics. We even updated his to the later TB so he didn't have the hose heater piece. Much cleaner setup and worked flawlessly. Good luck.
