Default Tire Width Question 18x10 Rim

OK, so I have a 2000 GT that the previous owner slapped stagger 18x9 and 18x10 wheels on with Sumitomo tires, since the rims are inaccurate for the model year, I was going to throw them on my new 13 GT, but I wanted to check to see if I could go to a bit wider tire then the 285/35/18 currently on the 18x10s

So my question, how wide can I go, safely without issues, meaning risk of blow outs due to width.

Recommendations please.

Gary I'm pretty much running the same set up as you on my 03. I have the 18x9's out front and the 18x10's out back running a 285 sumitomo tires (rear). I really didnt like the way the 285's were tucked up under the fender so I went the cheap way out and bought 1 inch wheel spacers. I've been doing alot of research on this same subject. I want to get rid of the 285's and wheel spacer's once I return from Korea. Seems as though the 305/35/18 series are a good tire for the 18 inch rim. I'll be going with a set of Nitto Extreme Performance 555 R tires from AM (with above mentioned specs).

Also the only problem I had with the 285 and 1 inch spacer is that on the Drivers side, the tire kept getting cut by the lip on the fender. I guess being 6 foot 2, 240 didn't help but I believe the newer models (05 and up) fenders are already rolled. I'll also be getting that done once I come home. I went through two tires in less than a year. If you look below this is how it looks with the 1 inch spacer.

305 in brand that runs narrow or a 295 in a brand that runs wide.

I ran 295/35 BFGs for a long time. Switched to 285/35 Cont Extreme Contacts and love the fitment.

If you are going to put them on an S197, be prepared for different offsets between generations.

^ right, the offset is way different. I had 18x10 on the rear of my S197 +30mm offset. With 285's the tires stuck out 3/16" past the fenders on each side, after centering w/ adj panhard. If your current wheels are offset for the new edge they will probably poke out a lot on the s197, especially with a 3xx wide tire.

The S197 is getting 19's... 19x9.5 with a 275/40/19 rear wheel

I was asking for my SN95 New Edge, I went back to 285/40/18 for the SN95 New Edge.

I see. I saw throw them on my 13 and thought that's what you were doing.

My bad... I meant for the new rims I was putting on the 2000.

My brain runs faster than my fingers.

The rims on the 13 come off this week and get replaced with drifts.
