Temp readding HOT but car is not overheating
So my temp cage was acting funny last winter where when it its cold, the temp cage stays on cold and never moves. a week ago, the temp cage moved a little passed middle for one day then it was normal again.
Yesterday, i was driving the car, stalled it cause i was extremely tired with 2 hours of sleep, turned it back on, then noticed that the temp was at HOT. I almost **** my pants, i pulled over, checked everything and it seemed to be fine, Coolant is fine..etc . No codes yesterday or today.
I turned it back on and the temp cage was way passed HOT, it was pretty much sitting sideways so i figured it might be just a cage and drove it home.
Engine is fine, coolant is at the right level and everything seems to be ok. What could this be, sensor? bad gauge? or what exactly.
Thank you
Car was off, no accessories
Accessories on
Running
running after 5 minutes
not sure if this helps

Temp sender would not keep the gauge stuck when the car is off as there is no power to keep the dial in that position. It's a stuck stepper motor most likely...Especially more likely on a 2005 which had rev 1 of those motors.

Excuse my ignorance, but i basically need to change the whole cluster?

Yep, this also happens to me. Your stepper motor is going out.
My temp gauge doesn't move, unless it's 65 degrees or higher. The days it is working, it will get stuck and when I turn my car on, the temp goes to the Hot section.
My RPM gauge is off by 75-150 RPM most of the time. My gas gauge also sticks or is off by 1/4 tank.
All you need replaced is the stepper motor, however the whole cluster will need to come out of the dash in order to do so.
There are companies that specialize in replacing stepper motors here in GA.

My o5 did a similar thing, then stuck down below C. My Tach has also stuck just below 0. I have seen services on eBay that sell kits to replace the steppers, or to rebuild the cluster. Anybody tried anything that works?
