Default 98 gt vert for 4.0?

ok I posted this over in the 4.6 modular forum too but I thought may get better luck over here. i have a 1998 mustang gt convertible, and well im not a huge convertible fan, and the 05 to 09 body style in my opinion is one of the best looking post 70s (before the mustang 2s) mustangs out there, I remember when they came out wishing I could afford one......now I can well, a 4.0 that is.....my question is, what can I expect coming from my 1998 4.6?? is the 4.0 similar in performance?? (i would get a 5 speed) if its about the same, Im sold. I love the 300 hp gt but its too costly for me at this point in my life (college student, insurance is a killer when you're my age!! and the initial price of the car ) and I like the idea of building a v6 to run with some v8s. anyway any feedback on how close in performace a 4.0 would be to my 98 gt is appreciated!!

Not a convertible fan?? Blasphemy!!

From what I've seen, they might actually be about the same. I've driven a 98 GT years back, but not an S197 V6... But I do think they're both rated about the same in terms of 0-60 times. I see guys on this forum talking about doing 0-60 in low 6 seconds, and the 98 GT seems to be about the same. Dunno if the V6 will feel the same or not though... The old butt dyno may like the older v8 better, and the V8 has cachet even if it's older and the performance is similar. I've spent about the past half hour trying to read up between the two, seems to my admittedly partially uneducated thinking that if you like the newer style better, that the performance should be close enough to be worth your while...

Quarter mile performance is similar. The newer m ustangs dont feel as raw though but you can do some mods like new gears and cai/tuner to help with the feel.

I have an '04 GT along with a 2010 4.0. The '04 definitely feels more "raw" as 99GTvert said. BUT. It is nice having the more elegant looking 2010 for when I need to go somewhere nicer, and the extra 5-7 mpg is nice too. I definitely won't be getting rid of either of them any time soon as long as I can afford them both. I also get compliments on them both all the time.
Performance wise, my '04 is better. But it is the PI motor, and its has long tubes and 3.73s. Granted, there are plenty of mods that will get a 4.0 performing just as well if not better than a stock '98 GT.
As said earlier it really comes down to personal preference. The '13 and '04 body styles are my favorite since the '67-'68. I got my 2010 in the summer of 2010 and it just wasn't economical to trade up to a 2013 after I had done a couple mods (and its close enough appearance wise that I still really like it).

Performance will be about the same initially and both can be built to out do the other. I have a 94 that is slower then my 07 4.0 but my 94 has original heads but all new valvetrain, my 07 has a intercooled procharger and is pushing over 300whp but just doesn't feel as good as sitting at a stop light with my 94 camming. I will never sell my 94 and may be selling my 07 soon but the performance will be the same you will just be in a newer version that doesn't sound as good but looks better with much nicer gadgets.

If I remember correctly, a 98 GT is capable of doing mid 14s stock and a slightly more peppy 0-60. You wont have the V8 bite/growl or even much better fuel economy (if at all), but you will get the modern interior/exterior styling that I've also fallen in love with.

If I were you, I'd try my best to hold out for a 2011+ Mustang V6. The exterior styling is very similar (personally, I like it more than the 05-09 models), but you get even more in the interior and under the hood.

Im not much for the rasp in that one but if you like more of the V8 tone mine sounds pretty deep and not raspy at all, this was before I put longtubes on it and it sounds even better now

I was going to say you'll probably get mixed reviews on the LM I. The LM I is more raspy than the LM II. However, be prepared for highway drone. I cannot attest to the LM I, but I have Borla Stingers, which are also straight through mufflers, and the drone is pretty bad. But its worth it to me
